Location: Portsmouth

Reports to: Artistic Director

Salary: £6000 for 1 year (average around £250 per day x 2 days a month)

Downtown Pompey, formally set up in 2020, is a performance-based organisation bringing together a variety of local communities in Portsmouth, through queer art practices; offering a space to explore identities and understanding that everyone has a voice and a place to be heard.  We are dedicated to preserving and sharing diverse histories through innovative and interactive experiences. We believe that every young person should see themselves reflected in history and feel empowered to explore the past through fun and engaging methods.

Role Overview:

The Youth and Play (Heritage) Practitioner will be responsible for designing and delivering playful, inclusive, and educational activities that bring history to life for young people. This role will focus on diversifying the narratives presented, ensuring that a wide range of histories are represented and that all young people can engage with and learn from the past in a meaningful way.

Key Responsibilities:

– Programme Development: Design and implement interactive, playful, and educational programmes and activities that explore diverse histories and heritage. Ensure these programmes are accessible and engaging for young people of all backgrounds.

– Heritage Interpretation: Work with historical content and collections to present them in ways that are relatable and fun for young audiences. Use creative methods such as storytelling, drama, art, and digital media.

– Community Engagement: Collaborate with local communities to incorporate their histories into programmes. Facilitate workshops and focus groups with young people to understand their interests and needs.

– Partnerships: Build and maintain relationships with schools, youth groups, cultural organisations, and other partners to expand the reach and impact of heritage programmes.

– Inclusion and Diversity: Ensure that all programming reflects a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This includes amplifying underrepresented stories and perspectives.

– Evaluation and Reporting: Monitor and assess the effectiveness of programmes, gathering feedback from participants and stakeholders to continuously improve offerings. Provide reports and updates to leadership and funders as needed.

– Resource Creation: Develop educational materials, games, and toolkits that can be used by educators, youth workers, and families to engage young people with heritage in fun and dynamic ways.

Experience:

– Demonstrated experience working with young people in an educational or play-focused setting.

– Experience in heritage, museums, or cultural organisations is a strong advantage.

Skills:

– Creative thinking and the ability to develop engaging and fun programmes.

– Strong communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to engage young people from diverse backgrounds.

– A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of work.

– Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work collaboratively with others.

Knowledge:

– An understanding of diverse histories and the importance of representing a wide range of perspectives in heritage work.

Other:

– Willingness to work evenings and weekends as required by programme schedules.

Desirable:

– Familiarity with digital tools and platforms for engaging young people.

– Experience working with marginalised communities and understanding their unique needs and perspectives.

– First Aid/Youth Work qualifications.

Start Date: Jan 2025 (with induction days in Dec 24)
